How to clean a leather jacket: main steps

First, dust off the jacket with a dry cloth. Naturally, there will be dust on it from being hung up for so long. Then, Dampen the cloth and wipe it again to get rid of the remaining dust.

It’s possible that some kind of substance has fallen onto the jacket. If this is the case, carefully remove it using cotton soaked in a few drops of alcohol and rubbing it.

This trick works for small stains. If it has a large stain, we should call our home delivery dry cleaners to tend to it. Under no circumstances should we use products such as acetone, nail polish remover or ammonia to clean the jacket.

History of the leather jacket

Leather jackets were worn by the military and pilots in both world wars. They were longer during these times and had a belt. Their use became widespread, mainly because they were very effective in protecting against the low temperatures at the time.

It was the pilots and aviators who began to use shorter jackets, called “bomber jackets”. They were shortened for comfort mainly, and were often lined with sheepskin for further insulation from the low temperatures.

Historia de la chaqueta de cuero

Although the beginning is based on military culture, the true boom and popularity of the leather jacket came from the motorcycle movement, rock groups and cinema.

In the motorcycle movement, like that of aviators, there was a reason for the use of leather jackets, to protect against knocks, scratches, burns etc. These jackets evolved and became a symbol among ‘bikers’, who felt that owning a motorcycle and leather jacket was a symbol of youth and freedom

When Marlon Brando combined the leather jacket with a basic white t-shirt, half of the women in the world fell for his rebelliousness. Thus, cinema began to place the leather jacket as a symbol of rebellion. Marlon Brando in ‘‘The Wild One’’ and Jack Nicholson in ‘‘Hells Angels on Wheels’’, are just a couple of many examples where we can see the use of this garment in cinemas.

The leather jacket became so popular that Harley Davidson marketed their own jackets, and still do so today.

Many other urban cultures, almost all related to the music world, have later adopted the aesthetics of leather as rockers or punks. It’s said that Elvis Presley had more than one million jackets and Michael Jackson gave it a leading role on the cover of his album, Bad.

Thus, the leather jacket has become a basic and timeless piece that should be in everybody’s wardrobe.

There are so many types of leather jackets, so which is which?

Over time, different jacket models have been developed, changing the cuts and the way they are made. How would you know how to differentiate them?

They are all leather jackets, short to the waist and normally with long sleeves. The classic jacket is the most common, straight cut with slim lapels.

The “perfect” model is very fashionable in recent years. It’s narrow and tight at the waist, with asymmetrical zippers, large lapels and was designed by ‘‘Outwear Irving Schott’’ to protect motorcyclists in case of an accident.

The bomber model promises to be the star this Spring. It has a tight waist but bulges at the top.

The most used colors are black and brown, but lately there are models of seasonal colors such as red or mustard, especially those for women. Leather jackets are expensive but many stores sell synthetic leather models that are available to everyone.
